Tourists wandering around the seaside cliffs at South Point or Punta Sur can visit the Temple of Ixchel, which, as Mexico’s farthest eastern point, is the first spot in the country to see the sun’s rays every morning.

In later centuries pirates would stash their women on the island as they went off to plunder, then come back for them, another source for the “Island of Women” moniker. During the last century, and into this one, Isla Mujeres more and more built a name among tourists as a place of immense natural beauty, a quiet fishing village that runs counter to the touristy hustle and bustle.
